Rosa acicularis - SVP

Prickly Rose, Wild Rose, Floral emblem of Alberta

Why am I listing this one separately?   A customer of mine had made a special request for rosa seed as he was studying them.  I sent off several packets, all separated out, clearly labeled as to when and where the seed was collected.  The seed that had been collected from this particular site germinated within a year.  Most rosa seed takes at least 2 years to germinate, requiring warm cold warm cold warm cycles to germinate.  Having said that there are other ways to get seed like this to germinate faster but not everyone has their own home laboratory.  I'm anxious to hear more of his results, very curious indeed.

In the meantime, I think I should offer this seed for those who want their wild roses to germinate in a more timely fashion.

Rosa mix - Alberta wild rose

Moving forward I will be donating all monies coming in from the sale of this seed.  So please join me in helping a great cause, Birdline Canada.  You may also go to their website and contribute through the Donate link on the site.

I am increasing the cost of a package to $5.00, and I'm increasing the amount of seed enclosed to 100 seeds.  Thank you.

There are three wild roses listed as native to Alberta: Rosa acicularis (Prickly Rose, Wild Rose), Rosa arkansana (Prairie Rose) and Rosa woodsii.

Rosa acicularis is the floral emblem of Alberta.  Another interesting note is that Native peoples placed rose branches around the home of a deceased person to prevent the ghost from returning and haunting the house.  (Good to know)

All of these wild roses have high levels of Vitamin C in the hips.  I know of quite a few people who will randomly munch on the hips and either swallow or spit out the seeds.  Personally I do not.  I've cleaned way too many to do that!

Rosa woodsii

Wood's Rose

This rose forms a dense shrub, perfect for birds and other critters to find refuge in.  I have one of these in my yard on the other side of the shed.  The small birds flit in and out of it year round.  The spruce grouse will eat the hips in winter and it is quite humorous to watch them jump up to try and grab them.

I found the densest form of this shrub I've seen yet out at Windy Point, Lake Abraham.  The pictured bloom is from this shrub.  It was quite a thicket of thorns.

Seeds may take 2 years to germinate.

Sorbus scopulina

This is the native mountain-ash, not the European mountain-ash (Sorbus aucuparia) that is so widely planted in towns & cities.

The fruit of the mountain-ash is high in Vitamins A & C, however they should not be consumed until the pomes are fully ripe.  The taste of the fruit is enhanced by frost.
