A Disclaimer Re: Vegetable Seeds

I have saved and grown a good many of my own veggie & fruit seeds over the years.  If I pick up a wonderful organic, locally grown item from the farmer's market, I'll save and grow the seed, of course.  I try to always leave something in the garden to go to seed, and that is not easy where I live.  We're lucky to get a 90 day growing season here.

I've not been great at saving a lot of info on veggie seeds because I never intended to offer them for sale.  There are so many huge seed houses that do a much better job of this than I can.  I have packages labeled as Pepper '20, Squash yummy solid orange, striped cherry tomato, like I said, I never meant to offer veggie seed.  Times are changing, my customers are asking....

What I am offering here is from my personal stock of seeds.  I grow them myself, I know they are free of any crap (chemicals, pesticides).  I urge you to start saving seeds from your own garden and from veggies, fruits that you know are good. (non-gmo, organic).

If you want a named variety of something I urge you to check out your local greenhouse, seed house, there are so many options.  I still shop for seed as well and I frequent Hanna's in Lacombe, AB for 98% of what I want.  Vesey's, T&T, OSC, West Coast Seeds are some other sources within Canada, all of them great companies.  And if you really want to do some serious seed drooling, go check out Baker Creek Seeds in the US.  If our dollar ever gets better.......

Butternut Squash

Cucurbita moschata 'Butternut'

Butternut squash has a sweet, nutty taste similar to a pumpkin.  It has tan-yellow skin and orange fleshy pulp.  Makes a wonderful thick soup, but I prefer it roasted with butter, salt & pepper.

Goji Berry - Lycium sp

Goji Berries - Wolfberry

I would have thought that these would not grow in my garden, and I never expected them to survive my zone 2B winter, but they did.  Talking to my Mom in MB, she has successfully fruited goji berries, but mentioned that the bush lasted only a couple years.  Succession planting for long term in colder zones?

I expect mine to fruit this coming summer, 2021, if it survives the winter.

Kabocha Squash

Cucurbita maxima - Japanese pumpkin

Kabocha squash is a dark green roundish squash.  The flesh inside is a bright golden orange.  Very tasty and makes a wonderful soup.  The skin is edible, although if you make soup don't use the skin as it will change the colour of the soup.  Learned that the hard way.

Spaghetti Squash

Cucurbita pepo subsp. pepo, also called Vegetable Spaghetti

Shaped more like a football, yellow skinned and yellow fleshed.   Once cooked, the flesh resembles spaghetti.  I prefer it with a bit of butter, salt & pepper.  I do know many who put spaghetti sauce on it and enjoy in place of grain made spaghetti.
