Allium sp - Perennial Onion

This came to me a couple of years ago from the owner of my favorite health food store.  It's a perennial onion but not one that I'm familiar with.  It grows well in my zone 2b and is increasing steadily.  I've used the greens on a regular basis throughout the summer and they are a wonderful addition to meals.  I would say they have an intense onion flavor, stronger than a chive or a bunching onion.

Worth a spot in your garden.

Bean - Blue Lake Bush

Bush Bean Heirloom  65 Days

Long green meaty pods, my favorite green bean hands down.  Not at all stringy.  Produces big bushy plants so give them room to grow with widely spaced rows.  Great for canning & freezing.

Beans do not like cold, wet soils, sow only after the soil has warmed up to 16C (60F) or germination will be poor.  Optimum soil temp for sewing beans is 21-30C (70-85F)

A smaller white dry bean.  Used for soups and my favorite baked beans.  Can be eaten as a green been when young but I leave mine all for dried beans.

Cucumber - Chicago Pickling

Heirloom 58 Days

Heavy yielding plants that are loaded with perfectly formed deep green fruit with black spines.

Resistant to scab & cucumber mosaic virus.

Cucumbers grow best in rich, warm, sandy loam soil.  Cucumbers are sensitive to cold, soil & air temps must before warm before planting.  Cool conditions will reduce germination & increase the chance of the seed rotting before it sprouts.

Cucumis melo - Cantaloupe

Yes, you can start seed from the cantaloupe you puchase from the store.  So why am I offering seed for cantaloupe?  Well, because this one was grown local to me using methods that I approve of, and it was the best cantaloupe I have ever had,  EVER!

Of course I saved seed.

Goji Berry - Lycium sp

SOLD OUT

Goji Berries - Wolfberry

I would have thought that these would not grow in my garden, and I never expected them to survive my zone 2B winter, but they did.  Talking to my Mom in MB, she has successfully fruited goji berries, but mentioned that the bush lasted only a couple years.  Succession planting for long term in colder zones?

Ground Cherry - Physalis pruinosa

These are super easy to grow.  In my area I start the seed about 6 weeks prior to my planting date which is about May 20th.  They self seed easily as well.

I've found that soaking the seed overnight aids for faster germination.

Very prolific

Parsnip - Pastinaca sativa

I think parsnips are an underrated veggie.  Classed as a biennial, they are tough, and survive easily to year 2 in my zone 2b.  They produce generous amounts of seed in year 2.  It's quite easy to get a bed of these going so you're never without.

Parsnips fries are delicious!
