Gilia capitata

A delicate airy annual, great for pots and window baskets.  Covered in tiny mauve blooms with peacock blue anthers mid July into August.  Dead heading will produce more blooms especially if the weather holds into September.

I prefer to toss some seeds into a pot, water it in and let nature do her thing.  Couldn't be any easier than that.

Lavatera trimestris

Annual mallow, rose mallow, royal mallow and regal mallow, that's a few common names and I'm sure there are probably more.

Super easy to grow just about anywhere.  I've found it self seeds quite well, even here in zone 2.  Easy to pull if you don't want it, but why wouldn't you.  Blooms well into fall.

Malva sylvestris mauritiana

Not hardy here at all so I am listing it as an annual, and it is sold here as such.  I think this should be a staple in the garden.  Blooms well into September and does tolerate our cool night temperatures.  Will self seed somewhat reliably in my zone 2.

I do love Marigolds.  They don't smell great but they sure do their part in keeping away some nasty critters.  Marigolds stand up to just about any weather, deer leave them alone, they keep blooming all summer... and they come in such bright vibrant colours.

Talinum paniculatum - Jewels of Opar

Fresh seed available as of July 20, 2020

This is an interesting little plant. Used in Chinese medicine and can also be used as a substitute for spinach (I've tried it, it would make a nice addition to a salad). Group many plants together in plantings, flowers bloom on airy stalks, they are small but are nice massed together, especially with the red bead-like buds and fruits. Bees love them.

I grow mine in a pot and bring it in for the winter.  I restarted my current plant when I moved here in 2015.  It doesn't skip a beat, growth does slow down some in my winter plant room, it stays green, blooming and happy as long as I water it once a month or so.  It's in a fairly large, deep pot.

To date I have not noticed that my local critters eat it.
