Dodecatheon conjugens

Best if started in a cold frame over the winter.  Not the easiest to get going in the garden, germination can be erratic.  Worth the effort though.

Starts to bloom end of May beginning of June here in central Alberta.

I've noticed that these can grow up to 60 cm in a garden setting.

Dryas drummondii

Yellow Mountain Avens

This is more a trailing shrub that forms dense mats.  It is a sight to see when there are fields of it growing.  Showtime is when dryas is 'in seed'.  Is that how one would describe it?  Mile after mile of fluffy seed heads.

Be patient when starting, germination is normally slow.

Available in larger quantities, but pre-order by June is required.

Product Overview:Perennial

Height:5-25 cm (2-10")

Positioning:Full sun

Germination:Cool germinator, irregular

Price:$4.00 (50 seeds per package)

Dryas octopetala

Limited Seed

White Mountain avens, White Dryad

Much smaller than Dryas drummondii, on the shrubs that I've found.  In our harsher climate it probably has to.  I've found this by Abraham Lake, AB and it forms dense mats in crevices on bare rock.  The flowering stems are maybe a cm, the blooms covering the dark green mat in the spring.  Grown in my garden the flowering stems are under 10 cm.

Product Overview:Perennial shrub

Height:Up to 20 cm

Positioning:Full sun

Germination:Easy if fresh, do not store

Price:$4.00 (15 seeds per package)

Erigeron philadelphicus

Philadelphia Fleabane, Skevish

My favorite fleabane.  It grows in open disturbed areas.  This beautiful little gem has spread over a nearby ditch.  From what I've been able to observe I would say this would make a great mowable ground cover.

Gentianopsis crinita

Fringed gentian

Found in moist open meadows, or wide ditches in the Rocky Mountain House area.  These are subtle blooms, walking the ditches you see a flash of something, and then before you is a dainty delicate flower with such intense color.  Beautiful small gems.

It was a wet year in the Rocky area and it shows by some of the plants found this past summer.
